How to buy Pokémon cards in 2026 without getting scalped

Retail first, sold comps second, never a TikTok asking price. A boring system that keeps you in the game.

The system

  1. Decide the SKU before you decide the price. “I want Pokémon cards” is how you overpay.
  2. Check Pokémon Center and sold-by-Amazon first. If it is at MSRP, you are done.
  3. If it is not, open sold listings on eBay and market + shipping on TCGplayer. The last 10 solds are the price.
  4. Never buy the first listing under a viral tweet. That is the trap.
  5. If you are ripping, run pack EV. If the pack costs more than the EV, you are paying for a show.

Red flags

  • Amazon third-party “new” ETBs with no photos of the seal.
  • Preorders more than 30% over MSRP more than three weeks out.
  • Sellers with no ratings on a $200+ single.
  • Any listing that says “invest now” in the title.
